Frame Restoration

Our frame restoration service involves the repair and refurbishment of frames to restore their original beauty and functionality. Where possible we use traditional materials and methods to ensure the original integrity of the frame is not compromised. Our services include:

  • cleaning & stabilisation - carefully removing years of dust and grime and ensuring all is solid
  • replacing missing parts - casting the missing parts from moulds taken from existing detail or carving the missing detail by hand
  • gilding - water or oil gilding using traditional methods
  • patination - ensuring repairs or replacement parts match the rest of the frame.

When restoring a frame, we aim to preserve as much of the original finish as possible. Prior to starting a project, we will of course discuss each stage of the process with you.

Other Restoration

Our restoration work doesn't stop with frames. Our studio has been involved in all sorts of interesting projects including:

  • restoring a seat from a Lancaster bomber aeroplane and building a wall mounted display frame to really show it off
  • manufacturing and replacing missing brass leaves from a beautiful ceiling light - see case study
  • restoring the crushed remains of a set of jumping deers
  • restoring the paint scheme on an original studio scale  Thunderbird 3!

And even if it's not something we're able to help you with, we probably know someone who can and will do our best to point you in the right direction.

Testimonials

"Nick mounted and framed three pictures for us but not before he performed his magic on one of them to ‘age’ it to match the other two. Utterly brilliant and beautifully done."

 S Illingworth

" Nick, has been my go to framer and restoration advisor for some time now. He has helped me frame some wonderful original and old posters, advised on oil restoration and has always provided second to none advice and council. His work is of a wonderful standard. I would recommend him to anyone. His enthusiasm to do a great job shines through."

S Ward

" Simply fantastic work from Nick. His passion for his work and the skill executed are impressive to see. I had an antique  mirror with a badly damaged plaster frame.  Not only did he fix & beautifully finish the area we agreed on but he also took the care and time to touch up the rest of the mirror at no extra charge. Very impressed with the work and can highly recommend him for any frame restoration !"

O Hilton-Johnson

"Nick did a great job in restoring the gilding on an antique mirror and patinating it so that it complimented the age of the frame."

T Taylor

"You've done an amazing job restoring the Lancaster bomber seat. My grandad would be proud. "
